The weekly market in Agoro subcounty, Lamwo district, has officially reopened after being closed for three months as a containment measure against the cholera outbreak in the area.

The reopening of the market locally known as the Auction was announced by the Lamwo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. William Komakech, who confirmed that it has now been two weeks since the last cholera case was reported in the subcounty.

However, Mr. Komakech stated that while the market is now open, several preventive measures must still be observed. The market will operate strictly from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no discos or public gatherings allowed afterwards. Additionally, the Okura River will remain closed under tight security until the Water Department confirms that it is safe. Furthermore, traders from South Sudan will not be permitted to stay in Agoro.

Mr. Komakech also called on health assistants and local leaders to work together in educating communities about sanitation and hygiene practices to prevent a resurgence of the disease.

Dr. Omoya Denish Ocula, the Lamwo District Health Officer, affirmed that the subcounty going two weeks without recording any new cholera cases is a strong indication that the outbreak has been contained.

He urged health assistants and village health teams to remain vigilant and to use the weekly market as an opportunity for continued sensitisation, in order to fully eradicate the outbreak.
