A 38-year-old woman in Ladit Oywe village, Lolia parish, Orom subcounty, Chua East constituency in Kitgum district, is expected to live with a pricking conscience after reportedly suffocating her one-and-a-half-month-old baby to death on Tuesday night.
The mother, identified as Anek Evelin, had reportedly spent most of Tuesday drinking at a nearby trading centre before returning home and accidentally lying on the baby, suffocating it.
The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) for Kitgum, Haji Waliri Marijan, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate for a mother to drink and neglect her child.
He revealed that the tragedy occurred while Anek’s husband was away making bricks. By the time he returned, the baby had already died.
The baby’s lifeless body, along with the mother, still suffering from a hangover was taken to Orom HCIII as police began investigations.
Haji Waliri condemned the increasing abuse of alcohol and other substances among locals and called for urgent community reforms.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the district and surrounding areas, sparking serious concern about alcohol abuse and its devastating impact on children in vulnerable households.
This heartbreaking case stands as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by substance abuse, especially in homes with young children.
