Leaders in Kitgum district have rejected a sport hunting initiative introduced by KKAKKA on behalf of the government that aims to provide hunters with an avenue to manage wild animals that are reportedly terrorising local communities.

Ocan Raymond, the LC5 councilor representing Pandwong Division, emphasised the need for comprehensive consultations with local communities before the district council can approve the initiative.

Mark Longoli, chairperson of KKAKKA, clarified that the program is not spearheaded by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and KKAKKA alone, but is a broader initiative aimed at safeguarding human life. He noted that, in addition to protecting people, the sport hunting program would generate revenue for both the district and subcounties, while also delivering benefits to local communities.

However, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Kitgum District Local Government, Abib Abubakar, urged councilors and district leaders not to hastily reject the program. He advised them to take time to consult with Members of Parliament and other stakeholders before making a final decision.

Ebil Jimmy Ssegawa, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kitgum, highlighted that KKAKKA’s presentation focused on environmental conservation.
