The Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council of Uganda has expressed concern over the increasing number of technical institutes with unused training equipment due to a lack of skilled operators.
Speaking during a meeting of chief trainers from across the country held at Kitgum Technical Institute on Tuesday, Rev. Fr. Robert Odong, the Diocesan Secretary for Education, said several institutions have received modern training equipment that remains idle because no one is trained to operate them.
Fr. Odong cited Kalongo Technical Institute as one of the affected schools, saying it received equipment such as lathe machines, injector machines, wheel alignment machines, and soil testing machines in 2018, but they have since remained unused.
He called upon the TVET Council to develop a framework that ensures every institute receiving such equipment also gets a qualified operator or technician to handle them.
In response, the Director of the TVET Council, Mr. Moses kasakya, said the council was established to address such challenges and ensure that all donated equipment is effectively utilized.
He also encouraged young people to embrace vocational skills training, noting that it empowers them to become productive and self-reliant citizens.
