A total of 165 Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) have graduated in Kitgum District after completing a six-month training course at Kitgum Technical Institute, aimed at bridging the gap between communities and formal healthcare services.

The training was supported by The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

The graduation ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the TASO Director, a Commissioner from the Ministry of Health, the State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hon. Lilian Aber, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kitgum, and other district leaders.

Speaking at the function, Dr. Okello Henry Otto, the Kitgum District Health Officer, said the role of Community Health Extension Workers is to promote health and hygiene, ensure children are fully immunized, mobilize pregnant mothers for antenatal care, encourage delivery at health facilities, and refer complicated cases to health centers.

Dr. Okello called upon the graduates to work diligently, bridge the gap between communities and the health system, and ensure timely medical services reach the people.

Meanwhile, Ms. Agnes Bako Chandia, the Commissioner for Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health, urged the CHEWs to work closely with Village Health Teams (VHTs) and actively engage in community health screening.

She appealed to the graduates to use good communication skills when dealing with patients and to remain committed to serving the community, despite challenges such as salary delays.

Ms. Agnes further called upon the offices of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and the RDC to closely supervise and monitor the CHEWs to ensure effective service delivery.

The Kitgum District RDC, Mr. Ebil Jimmy Ssegawa, assured the graduates that his office is ready to closely follow up on their work. He encouraged them to properly use the equipment provided, including bicycles, mobile phones, and record files, and to always uphold ethical standards in their duties.
