The Parish Development Model (PDM) Secretary of Lukwor Parish in Labongo Amida Sub-county, Kitgum District, has been released on police bond after admitting to misusing funds belonging to his own family members under the government poverty alleviation program.
Mr. Akura George confessed to collecting mobile money PINs of his 75-year-old father, Mr. Odong Caesar, and his elder brother, Mr. Lukwiya Maxwell, and withdrew their PDM funds without their consent. He later admitted to using the money, apologized, and agreed to resign from his position as parish PDM secretary.
Mr. Odong Ceasar, his father, said the incident caused him severe emotional distress, since he had planned to invest the funds in livestock to improve his livelihood, as he currently has no stable source of income.
His elder brother, Mr. Lukwiya Maxwell, also described the funds as a lifeline for the family, intended for income-generating activities. He expressed gratitude to the district authorities for intervening and helping to recover the money.
Meanwhile, the Officer-in-Charge of Amida Police station, Sergeant Anyeko Stella, said her office has handled several complaints related to misuse of PDM funds and warned that offenders will face strict legal action.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner in charge of Chua West, Mr. Okidi Joseph, condemned the misuse of beneficiary funds and warned that anyone found diverting resources will be dealt with accordingly. He added that the RDC’s office will closely monitor the beneficiaries to ensure the funds are used for their intended purposes.
