Kitgum District Council has banned primary school teachers from engaging in commercial boda boda riding during school hours, citing its impact on learners’ academic performance.

Pager Division Councilor Charles Otto Odera says investigations revealed that nearly 70 percent of male teachers are involved in the motorcycle business, with some abandoning classrooms, contributing to declining Primary Leaving Examination results.

Councilors noted that low salaries have pushed many teachers into boda boda riding for extra income, but leaders have now warned that those who continue to miss classes risk removal from the government payroll.

Chairperson of the Education, Health, and Community Services Committee, Ociti Diyan, called for stronger inspections, continuous monitoring by local leaders, and requiring teachers to reside at their duty stations.

He also urged sensitization of parents and closer supervision by the District Education Office to improve learning outcomes.
