Lamwo to Celebrate International Women’s Day at Paluda Secondary School
Lamwo District will celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day on 11th March 2026 at Paluda Secondary School in Paluda Refugee Settlement.
The celebration aims to recognize the contribution of women across the world for their perseverance in supporting families and communities.
Ms. Aleng Joan, the Mental Health Specialist with the Refugee Law Project in Paluda Settlement, said the event will also address the challenges women face and promote justice for women and young girls.
She noted that the organization has introduced a mobile court system in the settlement to help handle cases quickly and reduce the burden faced by families seeking justice. In addition, adult education programs have been introduced to help refugees improve their communication skills, alongside the creation of safe spaces for women and girls.
Ms. Aleng also raised concern that some actions by a few women, such as spending late nights in bars, expose them to insecurity and may set a poor example for young people. She added that there are still cases of defilement reported in the community that require continued dialogue and intervention.
She emphasized that the project does not only focus on women and girls but also promotes justice and respect for men in the community.
Ms. Aleng called upon residents of Paluda Refugee Settlement to turn up in large numbers for the celebration, which will feature various activities, including more than 60 traditional dance performances.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nyeko Wilfred, the Lamwo District Community Development Officer, said the Women’s Day celebration will promote decision-making among women and young girls.
He encouraged women to participate in leadership by contesting for Local Council One (LC1) positions so that their voices can be heard and their contributions recognized.
Mr. Nyeko added that the celebration will also help sensitize the community on gender-based violence, promote women’s rights, and empower women to access government programs and opportunities.
This year’s Women’s Day celebration will be held under the theme:
“Scaling Up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for All Women and Girls in Uganda.
