The National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Oyam have expressed concerns over the growing trend of syndicate politics among aspirants, which they say is threatening to divide the party.
“Aspirants are backing fellow contenders in either lower or upper positions to strategically outmaneuver opponents, which has weakened the party’s electoral success,” said Jaspher Onena, the NRM Chairperson for Oyam District, during an extended NRM District Executive Meeting on February 4, 2025.
Onena called on party members to “embrace love, unity, and cooperation to strengthen the party’s position in the region.”
Patrick Ogwang Obura, a hopeful aspirant for the Oyam South 12th Parliamentary seat, also condemned the practice, saying: “Candidates who field their own preferred aspirants at different political levels are weakening their rivals, which has cost the NRM several elections.
“Ogwang urged all aspirants to “abandon syndicate politics and instead promote peace, unity, and love for the party’s success.”

Apollo Oree, an aspirant for the Oyam North Parliamentary seat, distanced himself from such practices, saying: “Politics is an individual journey, and I will not engage in sabotage or rivalry. Instead, I will focus on my manifesto and campaign strategies for political success.”
The concerns over syndicate politics come ahead of the forthcoming NRM primary elections, which are expected to be highly contested ¹.
