Intern doctor dies while on duty at St. Joseph’s Hospital

Police in Kitgum district are investigating the sudden death of an intern doctor at St. Joseph’s Hospital – Kitgum.

Dr. Abaho Rodgers, 38, reportedly died on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, at around 4:23 a.m. after presenting to the outpatient department with rashes on his body and difficulty breathing.

According to Aswa East Regional Police Spokesperson, IP Joe Oloya, Dr. Abaho had reported for duty on Monday morning and signed out at 6:00 p.m. to return home.

He was later called back to the maternity ward at around 10:45 p.m. to attend to a mother who had delivered but was experiencing complications. He worked alongside a colleague, identified only as Dr. Komakech.

Oloya stated that at midnight, Dr. Abaho left for his residence in the nurses’ quarters but returned to the OPD at approximately 2:53 a.m. with rashes covering his body and difficulty breathing. Despite all efforts by doctors, he was pronounced dead at 4:23 a.m. on Tuesday.

Oloya confirmed that inquiries into Dr. Abaho’s sudden death are underway, and the body has been taken to Gulu Referral Hospital for an autopsy, as requested by his relatives from Ishaka, Bushenyi.
