A group of voters gathered at Oyam Boma Ground in Oyam town.

Leadership struggles have emerged among two businessmen and one farmer in Oyam town council, as all three vie for the position of Chairperson of the NRM party.

This development was witnessed after three individuals—two prominent businessmen from Oyam district and one farmer—expressed their interest in contesting for the NRM chairperson seat in Oyam town council.

Speaking to our reporter recently, Bonny Amoki, one of the prominent businessmen in Oyam town council, who has shown interest in leading the NRM party, highlighted his reasons for contesting. He stated that he believes he is the best candidate among his fellow aspirants because he aims to strengthen party mobilisation from the grassroots level to ensure the success of their parliamentary candidates.

Amoki also emphasised his commitment to ensuring that all allocated resources reach grassroots communities, something he claims has not been happening effectively.

On the other hand, Stallion Along, another contender and the current Chairperson of the Business Community for Oyam town council, said in his interview with our reporter that party supporters have been suffering for years.

According to him, this is the main reason he has decided to contest—to rescue them from what he describes as weak leadership that has persisted for over 15 years. He further pointed out that many Oyam town council meetings have been held in Acaba subcounty, as though Oyam lacks a leader.

Meanwhile, Christopher Omodo, the incumbent NRM Chairperson for Oyam town council, has expressed his intention to run for re-election. In his comments to our reporter, he stated that, to end the leadership struggles between the two prominent businessmen contesting against him, voters should elect him—a self-described “poor man”—to prevent the party from fading away. He urged voters to carefully assess the candidates, warning that his opponents might prioritise soybean buying over party responsibilities, which could negatively impact the party’s future.
