The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party elections, which were previously postponed in Oyam Town Council due to misunderstandings among party members and UPC Secretariat officials, are now scheduled to take place today, Monday, June 23, 2025.
The elections, which began on June 12, 2025, across all nine districts in the Lango sub-region, were halted in Oyam Town Council after disagreements erupted on the first day. However, the process will now resume, starting at exactly 9:00 AM.
According to Nelson Adea Akar, UPC Chairperson for Oyam District, the elections will begin with the selection of village committees across 35 villages within Oyam Town Council.
Seven individuals will be elected from each village and will proceed to parish-level elections, where 12 representatives will be chosen. The election for the town council leadership will then take place at 12:00 PM the same day at Oyam Boma Ground.Adea emphasized that only registered UPC members are allowed to vote and urged non-members to stay away from the polling stations.
Meanwhile, Christ Ongom, the UPC Regional Vice Chairperson, stated that the party president has deployed the Vice President and Deputy Secretary General to help resolve ongoing disputes and confusion in the Lango sub-region.
They are scheduled to begin their mission in Oyam Town Council, followed by Alito Subcounty and Alito Town Council in Kole District.
Their efforts will then shift to Apac District on Tuesday.
Ongom also called on all UPC members to participate peacefully and to avoid the confusion that disrupted the previous attempt on June 12, 2025, when irregularities in the party register were reported.
Voters interviewed by our reporters expressed excitement and determination to elect competent and visionary leaders. Many emphasized their desire to turn Oyam District “red”—a symbol of UPC strength—starting with Oyam Town, and to work toward sending Jimmy James Michael Akena Obote to State House in 2026.
The elections are scheduled to take place in the following areas between today and tomorrow:
1. Oyam Town Council – beginning at the branch level today at Oyam Boma Ground 2. Alito Subcounty and Alito Town Council 3. Barkalo Parish and Akalo Subcounty 4. Akalo Town Council 5. Aumi Parish 6. Angic Parish 7. Western Ward B, Bala Town Council 8. Eastern Ward A, Bala Town Council 9. One additional location in Apac District
