Geoffrey Owili, a senior member of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and a former parliamentary staffer with over 20 years of experience, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Oyam South County parliamentary seat.
On Friday, Owili picked up his Expression of Interest form from the UPC Electoral Commission offices in Kampala and was duly nominated, marking a pivotal step in his bid to secure the party’s flag in the upcoming primaries.
He expressed gratitude to the party leadership for maintaining a transparent and well-structured nomination process, and noted that the high number of contenders reflects the UPC’s vibrancy and commitment to democratic engagement.
Reaffirming his dedication to the needs of his constituents, Owili emphasized his focus on marginalized groups—including youth, women, elders, veterans, teachers, and catechists—stating that these communities deserve more inclusive and improved service delivery.
He also cited various livelihood projects he has initiated across the constituency as evidence of his commitment to empowerment through action rather than promises.
Owili joins seven other aspirants from Oyam District who have picked up interest forms to contest in the party’s primaries for various elective positions.
With a strong political background and two decades of parliamentary experience, Owili believes he is well-positioned to represent Oyam South effectively in the 12th Parliament.
Meanwhile, UPC Oyam District Chairperson Nelson Adea Akar—also vying for the position of LC5—commended Owili and fellow aspirants for stepping forward. He described their enthusiasm as a sign of the party’s strength and preparedness ahead of the 2026 general elections. Akar also urged for a peaceful electoral process, emphasizing the importance of unity and love throughout the primaries.
He stressed that reconciliation, both before and after the elections, would be essential to fostering party cohesion in Oyam District.
The UPC primaries are expected to attract close attention in Oyam South, a constituency regarded as politically strategic within the wider Lango Sub-region.
