Samuel Junior Engola Okello, son of the late Minister Col. Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo and former Oyam North MP candidate, has openly criticised the NRM leadership in Oyam District for allegedly attempting to block his bid to reclaim the party flag and contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
During the final day of campaign speeches on 11th July 2025, Engola was scheduled to speak last, following other contenders including Willy Omodo-Omodo and Billy Nelly Billsan Otoo. However, drama ensued when the NRM District Chairperson, Bosco Onyik, unexpectedly stood up, seemingly attempting to obstruct Engola’s turn to speak.
Visibly frustrated, Engola pleaded with Onyik and the party not to hinder his democratic right to participate, warning against internal manoeuvres that could undermine transparency. He passionately called for free and fair primaries and even asked Onyik for forgiveness, expressing his hope to win peacefully.
In response, Onyik invited Engola to air his concerns, insisting that the campaign should conclude on a positive note. However, his tone drew backlash from voters in Acaba, who perceived his remarks as dismissive and disrespectful. The crowd erupted in protest, with many—particularly women—demanding that the party treat Engola, whom they described as an orphan and a son of their community, with dignity.
The NRM Sub county Chairperson for Acaba, Tonny Otyek, further complicated matters by alleging that some attendees were goons hired by rival politicians. He defended leaders who had endorsed certain candidates, arguing that everyone is entitled to their political preferences.
Despite these claims, the crowd remained resolute. They demanded transparency and equal treatment for Engola in the party’s primaries scheduled for 17th July 2025, expressing concern that the party was sidelining a respected figure with deep roots in the community.
