In a powerful show of party unity, Akello Brenda Komagum, a UPC aspirant for the Woman Member of Parliament seat in Oyam South, has stepped down in favor of Hon. Santa Alum Ogwang. Her decision comes ahead of the UPC primaries, with a strong call for voters to rally behind Alum in both the primaries and the 2026 general election.

Speaking in Myene and Kamdini sub-counties, Komagum revealed that her step-down followed a three-day consultative meeting convened by UPC Secretary General Fred Ebil Ebil. “I made this decision out of deep love for UPC,” she told residents, calling on the people of Oyam to unite and safeguard the party’s leadership and development track record.

Komagum praised Alum’s 15 years of crisis-free leadership, emphasizing that her move wasn’t a surrender but a strategic show of loyalty to the party. “There is love among us aspirants. I stepped aside not because I lost, but because I want the party to win,” she said.

She urged her supporters to give unwavering backing to Hon. Alum, stating that she will actively campaign alongside Alum and fellow UPC member . “We are UPC children—we are building unity and love-based politics in Oyam,” she added.

James Ogwal, LC3 Chairperson of Myene Sub-county, applauded the decision: “Brenda shouldn’t worry. Her time will come. This is true patriotism.”

Simon Okello, LC1 Chairperson of Can Omia Aming and a strong NRM supporter, called it a victory for democracy: “Her act shows political maturity. I urge all NRM supporters to vote for Alum for the good of Oyam.”

Imat Matina Omodo emphasized the importance of unity: “If Brenda hadn’t stepped down, our vote would be scattered. Alum is a blessing to Oyam—she builds churches regardless of denomination.”

Meanwhile, UPC Secretary General Fred Ebil Ebil confirmed calling Komagum to the meeting, commending her for prioritizing party unity. He added that more consultations with other aspirants will be held to rally support behind Alum, praising her as the cornerstone of UPC’s legacy in Oyam.
