Students of Palabek Ogili SS, in Lamwo District, are leading a powerful movement to break menstrual stigma and promote Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights – SRHR among adolescents.
Through their Straight Talk Club, made up of 30 active members, supported by ADRA Uganda boys and girls are working together to promote open discussion, respect, and life skills in both school and their communities. Under the guidance of teachers Mr. Emede Simon and Ms. Lakot Filder Oyo, the club has reduced school violence and inspired students to take on positive projects.
Adoch Gloria, the school head girl, revealed that the boys have become allies in promoting menstrual hygiene, and together, they are working on making reusable sanitary pads. Olara Henry, a senior 3 student, revealed that after being trained by ADRA, he now makes liquid soap for sale, inspiring others to explore income-generating opportunities.
The initiative has drawn national praise. Dr. Migadde Deogracious from the Ministry of Health hailed the school’s inclusive approach, saying it shows the power of involving boys in SRHR education.
Dr. Moses Muwanga, Assistant Commissioner for Health Services, said the government is considering replicating the model in other schools.
These revelations were made during an evaluation and monitoring visit of the Together Project by ADRA Uganda and partners.
