Ugandans and Christians from around the world on Monday, February 16th, 2026 thronged Wii-gweng to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Janani Luwum, remembering his legacy of courage, faith and unconditional love.

The commemoration brought together believers, politicians and community members who reflected on Luwum’s message of peace in the face of oppression.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Ashley Null, the Bishop of North Africa, who was the Guest Preacher described Luwum’s life as a testimony of love over hatred, emphasizing his commitment to justice, human dignity and reconciliation during one of Uganda’s darkest political periods.

Rt Rev Dr Ashley reminded believers that Archbishop Luwum spoke truth to power despite widespread fear, extrajudicial killings and persecution of religious leaders at the time. He said Luwum’s sacrifice remains a powerful reminder that peace often comes at a cost, but must be pursued without compromise.

He urged Christians to reject hatred, corruption and selfishness, calling instead for repentance, unity and responsibility in society. Dr Ashley echoed the message of the East African Revival movement — to preach peace, walk together and resist injustice with moral courage.

Speakers after speaker including President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was the chief guest called for national unity, encouraging young people to carry forward Luwum’s legacy by promoting love, forgiveness and service to others. This year’s commemoration was marked under the theme, “Anchored in Christ for Stability, Peace and Unity.”
