Ugandans and Christians from around the world on Monday, 16 February 2026, gathered at Wii-gweng to mark the 49th anniversary of the martyrdom of St Janani Luwum, honouring his legacy of courage, faith, and unconditional love.
The commemoration brought together believers, politicians, and community members to reflect on Luwum’s enduring message of peace in the face of oppression.
Rt Rev Dr Ashley Null, Bishop of North Africa and the Guest Preacher, described Luwum’s life as a testament to love triumphing over hatred, emphasising his steadfast commitment to justice, human dignity, and reconciliation during one of Uganda’s darkest political periods.
Rt Rev Dr Ashley reminded attendees that Archbishop Luwum spoke truth to power despite widespread fear, extrajudicial killings, and the persecution of religious leaders at the time. He said Luwum’s sacrifice remains a powerful reminder that peace often comes at a cost, yet must be pursued without compromise.
He urged Christians to reject hatred, corruption, and selfishness, calling instead for repentance, unity, and social responsibility. Dr Ashley also echoed the message of the East African Revival movement: to preach peace, walk together, and confront injustice with moral courage.
One speaker after another, including President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the chief guest, called for national unity, urging young people to carry forward Luwum’s legacy by promoting love, forgiveness, and service to others. This year’s commemoration was held under the theme, “Anchored in Christ for Stability, Peace and Unity.”
