Lake Kwania, Dokolo/Apac — What was meant to be a peaceful journey of cultural duty and family reconciliation turned into an unimaginable tragedy on Sunday evening, when a father and his three sons drowned after their canoe capsized on Lake Kwania.
The victims—all residents of Die-old village, Alapata Parish in Bata Sub-County, Dokolo District—have been identified as Richard Ogwang (50, the father), alongside his three sons: Kenneth Angulu (26), Maxwell Opio (23), and Gerald Odeng (20).
According to local reports, the family had traveled from Dokolo to Acullobo village, Amiaberidwogo Parish in Ibuje Sub-County, Apac District. Their mission was to follow up on their daughter, who had eloped with a man from the family of Giddy Okello, and to peacefully finalize dowry arrangements as required by Lango customs. After successfully engaging the groom’s family and concluding the meetings on Sunday afternoon, the four men began their journey back across the lake.
As they navigated the waters on a small wooden canoe, the weather dramatically turned. A violent storm accompanied by heavy rain unleashed powerful winds that overwhelmed the small vessel. The canoe capsized, plunging all occupants into the deep waters of Lake Kwania. While two passengers managed to survive the harrowing ordeal, the father and three sons were trapped and drowned.
Kenneth Orec, an eyewitness to the tragedy, reported that at least six people were packed onto the small canoe, which was severely overloaded and ill-equipped to handle the ferocious winds and rough waters. Sam Odeng, a relative of the deceased from Bata Sub-County, expressed profound grief, noting that the family had simply gone to fulfill a traditional obligation regarding their daughter’s marriage before meeting their untimely death on the way home.
Local authorities and community members immediately mobilized to handle the aftermath of the accident. Alex Ogota, the Ibuje Sub-County LC3 Chairperson, confirmed the tragic incident and stated that local police and community divers were deployed to search for the remaining missing body after three bodies were successfully retrieved from the lake. He attributed the capsizing to the violent storm that battered the overloaded vessel.
Meanwhile, Andrew Onguk, the Apac Resident District Commissioner, stated that official reports were still being compiled at the time of initial inquiries. Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, acknowledged that news of the accident had reached his office, though comprehensive details were still being gathered from the ground in Apac. As families mourn and search efforts continue for the final missing loved one, this catastrophe serves as a somber reminder of the treacherous hazards of lake transport during severe weather.
