Alebtong

Police in Alebtong District have arrested two local leaders in Amugu Town Council for allegedly sabotaging a government livestock restocking program meant to benefit vulnerable households.

The suspects have been identified as Levi Odongo, the Town Agent for Acek Ward, and Lawrence Aliro, the LC2 Chairperson.

Their arrest follows an intense public outcry from frustrated residents who accused the duo of extortion and manipulating the official beneficiary list.

The Alleged SchemeTrouble started when residents of Ebong and Aminalweka cells discovered that names of legitimate beneficiaries had been sneakily swapped.

Investigations reveal that Odongo allegedly altered the official list to include individuals from outside the targeted community.

Furthermore, the officials are accused of demanding bribes ranging from UGX 200,000 to UGX 500,000 from poor residents in exchange for the government-funded cattle.

Authorities Intervene

The fraudulent scheme came to light after vigilant community members raised the alarm with the LC3 Chairperson, Bonny Ocen, who immediately triggered an investigation.

Speaking to the media, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) for Alebtong, Jimmy Okello, confirmed that a preliminary audit exposed at least four names that had been illegally swapped.ARDC Okello issued a stern warning to public servants who abuse government wealth-creation initiatives.

“Livestock restocking is designed to lift the poor out of poverty, not to enrich a few greedy individuals. Anyone found sabotaging government programs will face the full wrath of the law,” Okello warned, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report anyone demanding money for free government services.

Current Status

The two officials remain in police custody as investigations continue. They are expected to be charged with fraud and abuse of office.Meanwhile, angry residents are demanding the immediate dismissal of Levi Odongo from his position as Town Agent, citing a total loss of trust in his leadership.
