Otuke East MP invests UGX 75 million in community boreholes

OTUKE DISTRICT – Otuke East Member of Parliament Julius Acon Bua has urged political leaders to stop relying solely on government resources and instead use their own initiatives to provide essential services to the people.

Speaking during the launch of the construction of three boreholes across Otuke District on Sunday, Acon said he had personally committed UGX 75 million towards the project as part of efforts to address the persistent shortage of safe and clean drinking water in the area.

The three boreholes, each valued at UGX 25 million, are being constructed in Barapua Village, Atira Parish, Ogwette Sub-county; Okwalonyim Village, Omwonyolee Parish, Ogor Sub-county; and Acoke in Okwongo Town Council.

Construction began on 2 August 2026, with all works expected to be completed by 4 August 2026.

Acon said prolonged dry spells had left many communities struggling to access clean water, exposing residents to waterborne diseases caused by the consumption of unsafe water.

He noted that the project was intended to improve public health and reduce the burden faced by families, particularly women and children, who often walk long distances in search of water.

The legislator emphasised that leadership should be measured by action rather than dependence on government allocations.

“A leader should not wait for government funding alone. We must also use our own resources and influence to solve the problems affecting our people,” Acon said.

He appealed to residents to protect the boreholes from vandalism and ensure they are properly maintained so that they continue serving communities for many years.

Acon is recognised for financing community water projects across Otuke District, with several boreholes already completed in different villages.

His latest investment further highlights his commitment to improving access to clean water and enhancing the livelihoods of residents in the district.
