Speaking at the Lango Cultural Centre site on 10th July 2026, Mr. Kakooza said the government had made commitments to support the reconstruction of the Palace, which was destroyed by fire 20 years ago.
He revealed that a contractor was signed in 2021 to begin the work under a UGX 1.07 billion contract, but the project stalled after the company abandoned the site due to poor supervision by the cultural institution.
Mr. Kakooza appealed to the Lango Paramount Chief, Dr. Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, and other leaders to re-engage the government so that work can resume.

He also said the government should cancel the current contract and refer the company to the Anti-Corruption Unit for abandoning the project.
Meanwhile, Speaker Lango Cultural institution Willy Omodo Omodo said the Palace project was meant to have 3 components: the Palace itself, a museum, and a cultural center.
He expressed concern that only the Palace is being talked about now, which was not in the original plan.
Mr. Omodo also questioned the UGX 1.4 billion that was initially released, saying it does not match the work done on ground.
He said the reconstruction of the Palace will be a very important project for the cultural identity and development of Lango.
