Traffic and business came to a standstill on the street of Lira-Soroti road today, Monday, after boda boda riders blocked the highway to demand release of a colleague they say was unfairly arrested.
The protest centered around the street of Uhuru Bar Corner to Angwet-Anget , where riders barricaded the street using logs and burning tires.
Traffic was disrupted for nearly two hours as riders demanded authorities free their colleague.

The demonstration adds to growing tension in Lira City since authorities introduced mandatory boda boda registration at Shs35,000 UGX Many riders have been unhappy with how the fees are collected and enforced, with reports of motorcycles impounded during the exercise.

City authorities have maintained that registration is needed for security and planning after giving two more weeks ,while riders argue there was no proper consultation and the mode of revenue collection.
