Lira City — The North Kyoga Territorial Police Command has issued a public safety advisory, urging residents across the Lango Sub-region to remain alert and take precautions to protect themselves and their property as the country prepares to mark its 64th Independence Day on 9 October 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the regional command, North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP Jimmy Patrick Okema cautioned that while public holidays bring communities together in celebration, they can also create opportunities for opportunistic crime. He noted that as people gather at entertainment centres, places of worship and community venues, police often observe an increase in property-related offences. He warned that leaving homes unattended without basic security measures could make them easy targets for burglars and thieves.

To prevent such threats, SP Okema advised householders to take immediate security precautions before leaving their homes for the festivities. He urged residents to ensure their homes are secure by keeping exterior lights switched on at night, activating surveillance cameras where available, and ensuring that all entry points are firmly locked. He also emphasised the importance of community vigilance, encouraging neighbours to watch over each other’s property during the holiday period.

Addressing public conduct during the celebrations, SP Okema highlighted the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, warning that uncontrolled drinking can lead to preventable security incidents. He said excessive alcohol consumption impairs personal awareness and can leave individuals vulnerable to muggings, physical assaults and street fights. He therefore urged members of the public to celebrate responsibly, avoid walking alone in dark or isolated areas late at night, and make arrangements for safe transport home.

To maintain public order across Lira City and surrounding districts during the Independence Day celebrations, joint security teams have intensified operations in key areas. SP Okema assured the public that joint security forces, comprising both overt and covert units, have been deployed across the territory. He said the teams are supported by 24-hour CCTV monitoring and motorised patrol units positioned along major urban corridors and around high-density entertainment venues to respond swiftly to any incidents of lawlessness.

The regional police spokesperson appealed to the public to work closely with security personnel to maintain peace throughout the national celebrations. Reaffirming that security is a collective responsibility, SP Okema urged members of the public to cooperate with officers on duty and report any suspicious individuals, unusual gatherings or urgent safety concerns to the nearest police station or through official emergency lines.
