Amolatar, Uganda — Police in Amolatar District, under the North Kyoga Region, have opened a death inquiry file following the suspected suicide by hanging of a 73-year-old resident, Okello Joel.
The incident occurred at approximately 4.00 am on 20 October 2026 in Anyaklana Village, Alyet Parish, Aputi Sub-county. It was reported to the authorities by a local resident, Ocen Kamilo.
Preliminary findings indicate that on the evening of 19 October 2026, the deceased was seen at around 5.00 pm changing the ropes used to tether his goats and sheep. He later demarcated his land using local trees known as omara omara. These actions did not raise immediate concern among his family members.
At around 10.00 pm, he went to bed with his wife, Abuyang Betty. However, at approximately 4.00 am the following morning, his wife noticed that he was missing from their bed. She immediately mobilised their children to search for him. They eventually discovered his body hanging from a tree with a rope, about 500 metres from their home.
Upon receiving the report, a team of police officers visited and documented the scene. The relatives reportedly declined a post-mortem examination, after which the body was handed over to them for burial arrangements.
The incident comes shortly after other tragic losses in the wider sub-region, including the recent suspected suicide of Amolatar-born music producer Sam Lolo in Lira City.
Expressing concern over the reported increase in suicide cases, North Kyoga Regional Police Public Relations Officer SP Patrick Jimmy Okema highlighted the growing number of incidents in the area.
“This becomes the fifth suicide case in two weeks,” Okema said, raising concerns about the mental health and psychological well-being of residents across the community.
