Dr. Obote College Boro-boro Qualifies for East Africa Baseball Championship

LIRA — Dr. Obote College Boroboro has secured a spot to represent Uganda in baseball at the upcoming Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Associations (FEASSA) Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.

The Lira-based school earned qualification after finishing third at the National Secondary Schools Baseball Championship held at Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School in Gulu City.

Speaking to this publication on Friday, July 17, 2026, Games Teacher and Physical Education instructor James Akona said only the top three government-aided schools qualified for the regional games.

“Panyadoli Secondary School from Kiryandongo emerged champions, St. Peter’s Secondary School finished second, and Dr. Obote College Lira took third place to book a ticket to Morogoro,” Akona said.

He described the qualification as the result of an impressive journey for the school from winning the Lira City championship, to becoming regional champions, and now qualifying for East Africa.

“I encourage students to embrace baseball. Dedication to sports can open doors to international exposure and future careers,”he added.

Baseball coach Kizito Joseph Otim described baseball as one of the world’s leading sports that originated in the United States.

He expressed confidence that Dr. Obote College has what it takes to return from Tanzania with the trophy and appealed to other schools to invest in developing baseball talent.

Team captain Ajali Godwin Smith, a Senior Three student aged 17, said the qualification is historic.

“Baseball was only introduced at Dr. Obote College one month ago, yet we managed to compete against schools with years of experience. Representing Uganda abroad is a dream come true for me and my family,” Smith said.

Deputy Head Teacher in charge of Administration, Tom Ogwang, described the qualification as another milestone in the school’s history.

He thanked parents, teachers, management, and students for their commitment, noting that the success shows the value of supporting co-curricular activities.

“We will continue investing in sports and skills development to help learners unlock their full potential,” Ogwang said.

The FEASSA Games will be held in Morogoro, Tanzania, bringing together top secondary school athletes from across East Africa to compete in various disciplines and promote regional integration through school sports.
