Luka Odyek selected for national mathematics training camp

LIRA CITY — A 17-year-old student from Dr Obote College Boroboro in Lira City has been selected to represent Northern Uganda at the upcoming International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) national training camp.

Luka Odyek, a Senior Four student, secured the region’s only slot among 15 students selected nationwide by the Uganda Mathematical Society. His selection followed a rigorous two-stage examination process that began with 25 candidates at his school before being narrowed down to the final shortlist.

The two-week intensive residential camp is scheduled to take place at Light Academy Secondary School in Lweza from 9 to 20 December 2026. The programme will focus on competency-based mathematics, aimed at nurturing top talent for global competitions.

Robert Ocepa, the Uganda Mathematical Society coordinator at Dr Obote College, commended Odyek’s achievement, noting that a strong performance at the December camp could create opportunities for participation in international competitions in 2027. These include the 34th Pan African Mathematics Olympiad in Kigali, Rwanda; the International Mathematics Summer Camp in Beijing, China; and the India International Mathematics Competition.

The deputy headteacher of Dr Obote College, Tom Ogwang, expressed the school’s pride in Odyek’s academic achievement and confirmed that the administration would work closely with his parents to ensure he receives the necessary support during the holiday training period.

Speaking about his selection, Odyek attributed his progress to consistent practice alongside senior students and encouraged young people across the region to remain disciplined and committed to pursuing their academic goals.
