Kole North MP Urges Museveni to Reconsider Lango Roads

KOLE, UGANDA — Kole North County Member of Parliament Dr Samuel Opio Acuti has appealed to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to intervene and include the Corner Ayer–Aboke–Iceme–Bobi road in the government’s planned road rehabilitation programme ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The approximately 55-kilometre road is not among the routes currently identified for rehabilitation, despite its strategic importance to communities in Kole and the wider Lango sub-region, according to Opio.

In a letter dated August 21, 2026, addressed to President Museveni, the legislator urged the President to reconsider the list of roads proposed for rehabilitation and add the Lango route.

Opio said the matter was raised during President Museveni’s engagement with newly elected Members of Parliament at Kyankwanzi, where MPs presented issues requiring government intervention.

The MP argued that rehabilitating the road would improve connectivity within Lango and provide an important alternative route for players travelling from Gulu Airfield to Akii-Bua Stadium, which is expected to be one of the key venues associated with Uganda’s preparations for AFCON.

His appeal follows the Ministry of Works and Transport’s opening of bids for road rehabilitation projects, with Opio noting that none of the roads in Lango were included on the list of proposed routes, apart from the road connecting Namboole Stadium and Hoima Stadium.

Opio said he had also received reports that President Museveni had obtained an authorisation letter from the Ministry of Finance to approve funding for road works in Lango.

He cited the Namboole and Hoima roads, which he said have a combined length of about 72.2 kilometres, compared with the approximately 55-kilometre Corner Ayer–Aboke–Iceme–Bobi road.

Opio questioned why the shorter Lango route should be excluded if road length is being considered when selecting projects for rehabilitation.

The appeal comes months after the 2026 elections, in which President Museveni reportedly secured more than 80 percent of the vote in the Lango sub-region.

Opio is now urging the President to review the proposed road rehabilitation list and direct that the Corner Ayer–Aboke–Iceme–Bobi road be included among the projects to be undertaken ahead of AFCON.
