Richard Ongora, LC IChairperson of Acede-atidi Village, Acede Parish, Awei Sub-county, said the bridge was originally constructed during the administration of former President Dr. Apollo Milton Obote but has since deteriorated due to years of neglect.
“The bridge has become extremely dangerous for motorists and pedestrians, particularly during the rainy season,” Ongora said.
He revealed that on Saturday, June 28, 2026, four people narrowly escaped death after the motorcycle they were on plunged into a damaged section of the bridge. All four survived but sustained injuries.
Ongora said residents have repeatedly raised the matter with Alebtong District authorities because the bridge falls under the district’s responsibility, but “little progress has been made despite numerous appeals.”
He added that he has engaged Sam Oyena Obonyo, LC III Chairperson of Awei Sub-county, to push for urgent repairs to both the bridge and the road linking Awei Sub-county to Aloi Sub-county.
Oyena Obonyo confirmed he had personally inspected the site and witnessed the poor state of both the bridge and the road.
“I have formally written a letter to Alebtong District Chairperson, Ambrose Ongom Ongom, seeking immediate intervention,”he said.
District authorities must act swiftly before another serious accident or loss of life occurs,” Oyena Obonyo stressed.
