Man Attacked Girlfriend with Panga, and Swallowed Poison in Lira City West

LIRA CITY -25 July 2026 Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a case of attempted murder and attempted suicide that occurred on the evening of Thursday, July 24, 2026 in Te Dam Cell, Ojwina Ward.

The incident was registered at Lira City West Police Division.

According to a statement by SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, Police Spokesperson for North Kyoga Region, at about 7:00 p.m. a male suspect, whose identity is yet to be established, reportedly called his girlfriend, Lacwec Joan, 20, a resident of Barogole Cell, Ojwina Ward.

The two were allegedly involved in a misunderstanding prior to meeting.

“It is alleged that upon meeting, the suspect attacked Lacwec Joan with a panga, inflicting serious cut wounds,” Okema said.

“After the assault, the suspect allegedly consumed a poisonous substance and collapsed unconscious at the scene. Members of the community responded promptly and alerted the police.”

Both the injured victim and the unconscious suspect were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The suspect remains under police guard as investigations continue.

Police officers visited and processed the scene of crime.
A panga, believed to have been used in the attack, and a bottle containing suspected poison were recovered and exhibited as evidence.

Okema said investigations are ongoing to establish the suspect’s identity and the circumstances that led to the incident.

Statements will be recorded from the complainant, witnesses, and the victim when her condition permits.

A Police Medical Examination Form PF3 will also be issued to aid investigations.

The Police Spokesperson condemned the act and appealed to couples to seek peaceful ways of resolving disagreements.

“This is a primitive approach to handling disagreement. We appeal to people in a relationship to seek better ways of resolving problems by going to different stakeholders for help,” Okema said.
