Tension briefly gripped Nyangilia Secondary School in Koboko District on Monday, April 13, 2026, after students staged a peaceful protest against the school’s administration, citing poor leadership and declining academic standards.

The students marched to the offices of the Municipal Education Officer and the Mayor, where they voiced concerns about what they described as ineffective school management, a drop in academic performance, and reduced co-curricular activities.

Authorities swiftly intervened to calm the situation. The students were later escorted back to the school, where a joint meeting was convened involving key stakeholders, including the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), District Police Commander (DPC), District Internal Security Officer (DISO), the Mayor, members of the Board of Governors, and PTA representatives.

According to the West Nile Regional Police spokesperson, SSP Josephine Angucia, security teams worked closely with local leaders to ensure the situation did not escalate. She noted that students were advised against engaging in strikes and encouraged to use dialogue as a channel for resolving grievances.

Angucia added that following the engagement, it was agreed that all students be sent home temporarily to allow relevant stakeholders to address the issues raised by the learners.

“The situation is currently calm and under control, and police will continue to monitor developments,” she said.

Local leaders have since urged patience as efforts are underway to resolve the concerns and restore normal operations at the school.
