Mrs. Alice Nyiramahoro, the National Commissioner for Scouting in Uganda, represented by Patrick Icumara, the Deputy Head for Scouting in Lira City, has said that for Uganda to develop, scouts must be equipped with knowledge and skills that they can put into practice to bring change and national development.
Speaking with Patrick Icumara, he listed key areas such as first aid, gardening, reading, helping those in need, and environmental conservation as some of the important skills scouts learn. She said putting these skills into practice will help Uganda grow and reach Vision 2040.
He further encouraged the scouts to work with unity and discipline in order to become good leaders in Lango and other parts of the country, and to help move the nation forward as educated and responsible citizens.
Andrew Ogwang Oyang, the Senior Education Officer for Lira City, said in his remarks that scouting in schools is very important because it helps in building character and imparting knowledge to learners.
Ogwang also praised the schools that have established scouting programs in Uganda.
Dr. Precious Gracious Ocen, who spoke on behalf of the Deputy RDC, said scouts should not keep the knowledge they acquire to themselves.
They should put it into practice and also teach others, and use it to live a good life at all times.
She also encouraged scouts in schools to avoid bad peer groups and stay away from practices that destroy the youth.
The event brought together 13 schools that have scout groups. The scouts will also represent Uganda at a scouting event in Rwanda for 5 days.
Some of the schools that have scout groups include: Top Star SS, Lira SS, Adyel Boarding, St. Catherine, Dr. Obote College, and others.
