Dr Aceng gives Lira city two months to fix roads linking Anyomorem health centre III.

LIRA CITY – Lira City Woman Member of Parliament and Government Chief Whip,Dr.Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero,has given Lira City Mayor Sam Atul two months to ensure that the poor roads linking Anyomorem Health Centre III to surrounding communities are addressed

Dr.Aceng made the statement during the launch of the distribution of government hand hoes and maize seeds to beneficiaries in Anyomorem.

The directive followed concerns raised by residents over the poor condition of roads connecting their communities to Anyomorem Health Centre III and nearby markets.

Residents told Dr.Aceng that the roads become particularly difficult to use during the rainy season,making it harder for patients to reach the health facility and farmers to transport maize and other agricultural produce to the markets.

She appealed to the government and Lira City authorities to urgently improve the roads,saying poor road access is limiting their ability to benefit from healthcare services and agricultural opportunities.

Dr.Aceng said the deteriorating road network was undermining access to essential services and called on Lira City Council to prioritise the rehabilitation of roads serving Anyomorem Health Centre III.

“The poor state of these roads is affecting access to healthcare and the transportation of agricultural produce.The city authorities need to act and ensure that the roads are made passable,”Dr.Aceng said.

Responding to the concerns,Lira City Mayor Sam Atul explained that road selection and prioritisation is handled through Lira City Council,Lira City East and Lira City West divisions,working through the relevant roads committees.

He said the committees assess and prioritise roads for rehabilitation based on the available budget and the condition of the city’s road network.

Atul said he could not independently order road works without following the established planning and budgeting process.

He urged residents with concerns about specific roads to formally report them to the Secretary for Roads at Lira City Council so that the matter can be brought to his attention.

“Starting from today,residents should not call me because of the poor road network. They should call the Secretary for Roads in Lira City,” Atul said.

The Mayor added that he has more than 17 responsibilities to handle,making it difficult for him to address all challenges at the same time.

Following Dr.Aceng’s intervention,Mayor Atul and the roads committee committed to reviewing the condition of the road connecting Anyomorem Health Centre III and taking action before the two-month deadline.

Dr.Aceng also committed to returning to the area within two months to assess whether Lira City Council has acted on the road concerns.

The challenge now puts the city authorities under pressure to improve the road network, which residents say is vital for access to healthcare and the transportation of agricultural produce to markets.
