Agro Foundation Limited, known for cultivating high-value crops such as coffee, cashew nuts, macadamia, and avocado, has launched a pilot maize-growing project in Anaka Sub-county, Lamwo District. The initiative aims to help smallholder farmers transition from subsistence to commercial farming.

The project will target 60 farmers, each with at least two acres of land, with a collective goal of producing 240 tonnes of maize in a single season.

According to Mr Odoki Eric, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager at Agro Foundation Limited, the company is partnering with Bukona, an ethanol plant in Nwoya District, to provide farmers with high-quality seeds, training workshops, and capacity-building sessions on modern farming practices. Farmers will also receive transport support for bulk produce, and a ready market for the maize has already been secured.

Agro Foundation is collaborating with three organisations — Bukona, the Lamwo District Local Government, and the community-based organisation WAPU in Kitgum Municipality — to boost farmer participation and input supply.

Mr Odoki urged farmers to seize the opportunity, emphasising that shifting to commercial agriculture could significantly improve both yields and livelihoods.
