The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Party President, Jimmy Akena, has announced plans by the Jimmy Akena Foundation to rehabilitate a cattle dip site in Ogwapoke Village, Pobech Parish, Mucwini East Sub-county in Kitgum District.

The cattle dip, which was established during the regime of former President Milton Obote, has been non-functional for over 40 years. Its operations were disrupted by political instability after 1972 and later by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency in the early 2000s.

Mr. Akena noted that revamping the cattle dip will help local farmers control livestock diseases, particularly tick-borne infections that have been affecting animals in the area.

The Foundation has reportedly secured funding to support the rehabilitation works, including the restoration of a nearby dump estimated to contain about 1.5 million cubic meters. He revealed that the Foundation intends to rehabilitate up to 80 cattle dip sites across regions expected to benefit from animal compensation programs, including Acholi, Lango, and Teso.

Kitgum District Acting Veterinary Officer, Mr. Francis Omona, welcomed the initiative, saying the restored cattle dip will play a key role in controlling ticks through proper spraying of animals.

He added that although the Jimmy Akena Foundation has pledged initial support, the district will eventually assume full responsibility for managing and sustaining the facility.
