World Chimpanzee Day to be celebrated on July 14th

As the world prepares to mark World Chimpanzee Day on July 14, members of the Abathanji Clan in Kasese District have been urged to take an active role in conserving the chimpanzee, their clan totem, to ensure its survival for future generations.

Speaking to our reporter in Kasese town yesterday, the chairperson of the Abathanji Clan Association, Mr. Ericana Kisobulo, called on the people of Kasese, particularly communities living near national parks and other gazetted conservation areas, to support efforts aimed at protecting chimpanzees and other wildlife species.

Mr. Kisobulo later said conservation is vital not only for preserving cultural heritage but also for promoting tourism, supporting traditional medicine research, and safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, Uganda is home to an estimated 5,000 chimpanzees, making the country one of Africa’s important strongholds for the endangered great ape. This year’s International Chimpanzee Day will be commemorated under the theme, Protecting the Chimpanzee and Its Habitat,” highlighting the need to conserve chimpanzees and the ecosystems they depend on for survival.
