The local council three Chairperson of Central Division in Kasese Municipality, Mr. Baramu Baluku, has announced plans to intensify financial literacy sensitization campaigns for market vendors as part of efforts to improve household incomes and boost local revenue collection.
Speaking during the launch of the construction of 30 market stalls at Katadoba Market in Nyakabingo II Ward yesterday, Mr. Baramu also said the project, estimated to cost about 20 million shillings, is intended to create a better trading environment while promoting economic empowerment among vendors.
He urged traders to embrace a savings culture by prioritizing essential expenditures over luxuries and called on them to take ownership of the their market which complements other government initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and raising the standard of living for local residents.
Excited market vendors, including Ms. Mary Musoki and Ms. Joyce Kabugho, like other beneficiaries welcomed the new stalls project but appealed to the authorities to extend and improve the design of the market shed, saying its current structure allows rainwater to be blown in by strong winds, leaving traders and their merchandise exposed to harsh weather conditions.
For Ms. Rose Biira and Ms. Mary Musoki, both market vendors, welcomed plans for financial literacy, saying equipping traders with skills in budgeting, saving, and managing their businesses would enable them to make informed financial decisions and improve their livelihoods.
