The upcoming Local Council one and two elections in Kasese Municipality risk being overshadowed by allegations of electoral irregularities that could trigger investigations and possible legal disputes if not addressed early.

The concerns were raised by the National Resistance Movement flag bearer for the LC I chairperson seat in Kidodo Cell, Mr. Sharifu Geoffrey Masereka, who accuses the leadership of St. Leos College of Science and Technology of unlawfully registering students as residents of Kidodo to enable them to participate in the local council elections.

Speaking to our reporter shortly after picking his nomination forms, Mr. Sharifu said the matter had already attracted the attention of relevant authorities and that investigations would be pursued into the alleged actions of the school’s leadership.

Responding to the allegations, the Executive Director of St. Leos College of Science and Technology, Mr. Ronald Kabuku, urged Mr. Sharifu to correctly interpret the electoral laws, arguing that any eligible voter has the right to register and vote in the area where they ordinarily reside, if they so choose.

Mr. Sharifu, who also cautioned against political misinformation and unfounded allegations during the electoral process, appealed to residents and all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and conflict-free voter registration exercise, which ends today. He further expressed hope that the subsequent Local Council elections, scheduled for later this month and in August, would be conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful environment.
