Local council elections in Kasese district are underway

A section of Local Council one chairpersons in Kasese Municipality has said it will not be distracted by the forthcoming Local Council I and II elections, alleging that some individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities intend to use the polls to undermine local leaders in an effort to evade arrest.

Speaking to journalists last weekend, the LC I Chairperson for Kitooro Cell in Nyamwamba Division, Mr. Isaya Thembo, claimed he had received information about plans by individuals he described as abettors of lawlessness to campaign against his re-election but that he would not be diverted from enforcing law and order by what he called the selfish interests of suspected criminals.

Mr. Jafali Kigutiha, the local council one chairman for Basecamp lower, concurred with Mr. Isaya however calling on the government to review both their allowances and the payment process, arguing that the critical role they play in community development and security is not adequately recognised.

The leaders want their current annual allowance of 120,000 Shillings replaced with a monthly stipend, saying the demands of the office require consistent financial support.
