Police arrests father over forced marriage of 14-year-old daughter

Police in Apac district is holding a 40-year-old man accused of forcing his 14-year-old daughter into marriage.

Geoffrey Ogwal, a local of Bardek B cell, Bung Ward, Atik division, Apac municipality was arrested yesterday as the marriage ceremony for his underage daughter was going on. The suspect was reportedly set to receive two cows as dowry for the minor.

Ogwal’s arrest followed a tip off to police by some local residents.

Apac District Police Commander, David Wills Ndaula confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

Sam Opira, the secretary for education and health tasked local leaders to strengthen the fight against early marriage among young girls.
