Government of Uganda loses 1.4 trillion shillings annually due to absenteeism among civil servants.

This was revealed by Peter Mwebesa, the manager, research and learning at the Inspectorate of Government, quoting a report from National Integrity Survey which shows that 85% of civil servants in Uganda absent themselves from work.

Mwebesa who was addressing leaders of Apac District during dissemination of a survey on the cost of corruption in Uganda said absenteeism is highest among health workers and teachers in government schools.

Mwebesa explained that government loses 726 billion shillings and 33.3 billion shillings annually due to absenteeism among teachers and health workers respectively.

Apac district Chief Administrative Officer, Cannon George Adoko attributed high cases of corruption in Uganda to laxity by government to follow up corruption cases and poor implementation to laws intended to fight the vice.

Apac Resident district Commissioner George Abdul rallied civil servants to support government in the fight against corruption.

Apac District police commander Kafere Rogers said most Ugandans are used to corruption and consider it as something normal and legal.
