Police in Lira City have launched a manhunt for a trader accused of allegedly mixing beans with used engine oil before selling them to the public.

The suspect, identified as Sadrick, reportedly fled the scene after local leaders and law enforcement officers moved to apprehend him on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The joint operation was launched by leaders from Produce Line and Bazaar Ward following reports that beans were allegedly being mixed with used engine oil—commonly known as black oil—before being put on the market.

According to Bazaar Ward Councillor Pillar Ocen, local leaders received a tip-off on the evening of September 7, 2026, alleging that Sadrick was actively involved in adulterating beans with used engine oil.

Ocen stated that the allegations were particularly alarming because the treated beans were reportedly being supplied to local schools, putting the health of hundreds of children at risk.

He warned school administrators and the general public against purchasing suspiciously cheap produce, urging consumers to remain vigilant when buying food items.

Ocen also criticized certain leaders in Produce Line, accusing them of failing to take decisive action against traders suspected of engaging in the illicit practice.

Bazaar Ward LC2 Chairperson Hendry Kasule noted that the suspected traders were selling the adulterated beans at Shs 2,500 per kilogram, significantly below the standard market price of Shs 3,500 or more for genuine produce.

According to Kasule, the suspects used the engine oil to alter the physical appearance of the beans and attract unsuspecting buyers looking for a bargain.

Meanwhile, Produce Line Chairperson Tom Etuku revealed that this was not the first enforcement action involving produce suspected of being treated with engine oil.

He confirmed that on September 7, 2026, local leaders intercepted a truck carrying a consignment of suspected beans and blocked them from entering the market.

Police in Lira City, working alongside local enforcement officers, have seized the suspect produce as preliminary investigations proceed.

The primary suspect remains at large, and police are actively tracking his whereabouts to assist with ongoing investigations into the alleged sale of contaminated food products.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and civic leaders, who are now calling for thorough investigations and stern action against anyone found guilty of endangering public health.
