As Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, political parties have begun preparations for the period. Yesterday, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, based at Kyadondo headquarters in Kampala district, commenced the process of receiving members who wish to contest for positions of Member of Parliament, Local Council (LC) V, and Municipal/Division Mayors.

Speaking to journalists, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, said the process began peacefully and encouraged party members to participate. The period for expressing interest will end on 15th June 2025, with party primaries scheduled for 16th June 2025.

The Vice President of Uganda, Jessica Alupo, is among those who picked up nomination forms to contest again for Woman Member of Parliament for Katakwi district. The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, also picked up nomination forms and urged the people of Kakumiro to re-elect her. She stated that she would not run as an independent candidate if she loses the primaries but expressed strong optimism about winning both the primaries and the 2026 race.

“My leadership as Woman Member of Parliament has over the years been built on hard work and effective service delivery. I ask the people of Kakumiro to support me again in the coming elections,” she said, thanking the President for championing democracy through a free and fair electoral process.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, while speaking to journalists, commended the NRM Electoral Commission for a job well done and encouraged participation among members. He also affirmed that he would not contest as an independent candidate if he loses the primaries.

“To me, leadership means going down to the communities, listening to the people, and bringing their voices to national and global platforms wherever I have the opportunity to represent them. It also means working hand in hand with communities and mobilising them for the collective good. I feel energised to continue serving both my constituents and the country as Deputy Speaker. I thank the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, for the seamless electoral process. I pledge to follow the party’s electoral guidelines during this crucial exercise,” he said.
