The eight presidential candidates and all parliamentary candidates today officially concluded their campaigns across various parts of the country. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential flag bearer, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, held his final campaign rally at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
Museveni was accompanied by his wife, Hon. Janet Museveni, who addressed supporters first and encouraged all eligible voters to turn up and vote for the NRM party candidates.
“I want to thank all the families of Uganda for supporting us throughout the campaigns. As I have always said, coming in big numbers at rallies is not enough. On polling day, please go out and vote for President Museveni and all NRM flag bearers, and let God be God,” she said.
In his address, President Museveni said Uganda’s economy has grown seventeen times compared to 1986. He noted that despite challenges, Uganda remains among the fastest-growing economies in the world.
“We have different ways through which both the rich and the poor can earn money. In spite of the challenges, Uganda is among the fastest-growing countries in the world. Those who say that NRM has done nothing for the economy are misleading the public,” Museveni said.
He explained that Uganda produces about 700,000 tonnes of sugar annually, yet the domestic market consumes only about 300,000 tonnes, stressing the need to expand into regional markets. Museveni added that the NRM government plans to increase funding under the Parish Development Model (PDM) to address poverty, urging parish members to register and participate in electing leadership committees.
The NRM flag bearer also said that his campaign involved not just rallies but celebrations, citing the large turnout and enthusiasm of supporters. He pledged to address the theft of drugs in government hospitals, ensure children attend government schools free of charge, protect citizens from unlawful land evictions, and fight corruption, including the selling of jobs.
“All NRM leaders must participate in the fight against corruption. Do not fear anyone. Go and vote peacefully. Anyone who attempts to disrupt the peace will be dealt with according to the law. Nobody has the right to intimidate you,” Museveni said.
The event was attended by ministers, Members of Parliament, and members of the general public.
