As Parliament prepares to elect its next Speaker, several Members of Parliament have begun expressing interest in contesting for the top position.
Among those who have publicly declared their bid for the Speakership are the incumbent Speaker, Hon. Anita Annet Among, Democratic Party (DP) President General Norbert Mao, and State Minister for Lands, Persis Namuganza, among others.
The aspirants have started outlining what they intend to do if elected. However, public opinion remains divided. Some Ugandans believe Hon. Anita Among still deserves to lead Parliament, while others are calling for change.
Speaking to the media, the NRM Deputy Chairperson for Gomba District, Juma Wittonze Kiseka, said there is no reason for Hon. Anita Among to vacate the office, citing her capability and contributions to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
He advised those intending to challenge her to reconsider, arguing that the Speakership requires experience and leadership qualities beyond rhetoric. He also urged DP President General Norbert Mao to first strengthen his party’s cooperation with the NRM before seeking the position.
Meanwhile, Kiseka revealed that he is contesting for a seat in the East African Legislative Assembly. He noted that if given the opportunity, he would focus on initiatives aimed at strengthening Uganda’s economy and enhancing regional integration within the East African Community.
