The Electoral Commission (EC) has appealed to all candidates, supporters, and security personnel to embrace peace during the Kawempe North Division constituency campaigns for the area Member of Parliament and the Direct Councilor for Kazo-Angola.

“We urge all stakeholders to uphold peaceful and orderly campaigns as candidates engage with voters at designated venues,” the EC stated.

It is believed that Godfrey Onzima, one of the supporters, suffered a broken leg, according to him, after being attacked by security operatives while he and others were heading to a rally for one of the ten candidates.

This appeal comes at a time when some candidates have raised concerns about their treatment by security personnel in recent days.

National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Luyimbazi Erias Nalukoola, during one of his campaigns, thanked his supporters for their courage.

National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Faridah Nambi condemned the actions of some security personnel. She assured the people of Kawempe North that her manifesto prioritises lobbying for funds to empower women and youth, whom she believes are most affected by economic hardships due to a lack of jobs.

“I have spent over 20 years in children’s ministry. I request you to vote for me,” Nambi said. She is also the founder and executive director of Nambi Children Initiatives.

Democratic Party (DP) candidate Henry Kasacca has also launched his campaign, telling voters he is the best choice.

“We need funds to help us add value to people striving for self-development. They need facilities that support their growth,” he said.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Mukiibi Sadat, also known as Aganaga, positioned himself as a problem solver.

“I have come to bring solutions. I am not like other leaders who say, ‘Uganda is bleeding,’ or ‘We are removing a dictator,’ yet they have been in Parliament for 20 years,” he said.

Other candidates vying to represent the people of Kawempe North include People’s Progressive Party (PPP) candidate Moses Nsereko, as well as independent candidates Engena Edward Stanley, Luswa Luwemba Muhamad, Hanifa Karadi, among others.

According to the Electoral Commission, Kawempe North Division Constituency has 197 gazetted polling stations. Campaigns will end on March 11, 2025, and polling day is set for March 13, 2025.

This by-election follows the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, in January 2025, in accordance with Ugandan electoral laws.
