As part of discovering talent and building confidence in students, Kyadondo Secondary School in Matuga, Kilyagonjo, Wakiso district, held its Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD) competitions today, with students from various houses taking part. The headteacher of the school, Hajj Waligo Ismail, explained the importance of such activities in schools, particularly under the new lower secondary curriculum, which emphasises the need for students to be creative.

Hajj Waligo Ismail, Headteacher, Kyadondo Secondary School, Wakiso District.

“Today, we thank God for the two activities we’ve had in one. Namely, four different houses competing in Music, Dance, and Drama, and also for the success of our students in last year’s Uganda National Examinations Board exams. Regarding the MDD competitions, it has shown us that the new curriculum has made tremendous progress. Students can now leave high school with practical skills, which was not the case with the old curriculum. In this world, many comedians and artists have seen their lives change positively because of their talents. We understand that not everyone will succeed in class, but talent can also pave the way for success in life,” he explained.

The headteacher, in the same spirit, mentioned that they had officially congratulated and appreciated their students who sat for their Senior Four and Senior Six exams in 2024. “We have appreciated our students who performed well last year in Senior Four and Senior Six. All of them passed with flying colours. In Senior Six, four of our candidates ranked among the best in the country, three of whom were studying the Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics combination, and the other was pursuing Art subjects. This act of appreciation is to teach them that when you do something good, you deserve to be recognised, and it also encourages other learners to work hard so that they too can be appreciated one day,” Waligo said.

He also advised the students soon joining university to be prayerful and disciplined. “To our former Senior Six students joining university soon, we advise them not to forget God, to be disciplined, and to remain humble. They must remember that at university, no one will be there to remind them to study or stay focused. They should know why they are at university and maintain their studies, despite the freedom. Many people are waiting to divert these students, especially girls, so they must be very careful when choosing their friends. They should choose productive friends who will help them succeed in their studies,” he said.

It should be remembered that, according to the Uganda AIDS Commission, girls aged between 14 and 25 are the most affected group with HIV and AIDS. The commission has been encouraging young people, particularly those in high school and university, to always be cautious regarding sexual behaviour.
