The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has today officially launched the construction of the new Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters at Lubowa–Lweza, Makindye-Ssabagabo Division, in Kampala District.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Nabbanja commended the EC for its consistent efforts in organising national elections and for already implementing parts of its electoral roadmap.
“On behalf of the government, I want to welcome you to this groundbreaking. The Commission has successfully organised six general elections and has already achieved two milestones on the current roadmap. This is a clear indication that Uganda is a democratic country. The government remains committed to supporting its agencies—actions speak louder than words, and I believe the necessary funds will be allocated on time. I also commend the National Housing and Construction Company,” she said.
Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, welcomed the development, noting that the Commission has long required a permanent facility.
“We thank the Government of Uganda for funding the project. We hope the presidential nominations will be conducted here and that this facility will serve as the national tally centre for the forthcoming elections. At present, we are renting; this project will resolve that issue. Let us all be ambassadors of peace and stability,” Byabakama stated.
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, described the launch as a significant milestone.
“This has been a journey, and today’s groundbreaking is part of it. We all know that buildings are manifestations of power. We extend our sincere thanks to the government for providing the funds for this project,” Mao said.
Construction of the EC building will be undertaken by China Construction Company Limited and is expected to take 24 months to complete.
Meanwhile, in a separate political development, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has announced the withdrawal of one of its presidential contenders from the race.
Speaking to journalists at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, the party’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Totelebuka Boniface, revealed that Patrick Oboi Amuriat, one of two candidates vying for the party presidency, has officially stepped down.
“Today, I received a handwritten letter from candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat, indicating his decision to withdraw from the race. I want to thank him for the choice he has made,” said Totelebuka.
Amuriat expressed gratitude to his supporters and stated that, after careful consideration, he had chosen to step aside and allow Hon. Nandala Mafabi to lead the party. In response, Mafabi thanked Amuriat for his gesture and pledged to uphold the party’s values and ensure it is not brought into disrepute.
