President Yoweri Museveni today joined thousands at Kololo ceremonial grounds for a pre-birthday celebration organized by the Bodaboda Union, led by their chairman Frank Mawejje.
The event, attended by top government officials including Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Minister of Finance Hon. Matia Kasaija, Minister of State for Finance Evelyn Anite, Minister for Kampala Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuye, and KCCA Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki, was marked by gratitude and pledges of government support for the transport sector.
In his speech, Museveni thanked the Bodaboda union for organizing the event and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting their cooperatives. “I will sit with the state house controller to see how much we can give in the SACCOS of the Bodaboda riders. We want to deal with organized people,” he said. He also promised to address the concerns raised by Taxi Operators’ leader Rashid Sekindi, assuring him of feedback next week.
First Lady and Minister of Education Janet Museveni commended the riders for appreciating the president’s contribution to Uganda’s development, urging them to support government initiatives and maintain peace.
Union chairman Frank Mawejje hailed Museveni for standing with the sector, recalling how his leadership has helped them overcome exploitative lenders. He pledged their support for the president in the upcoming general elections. “We don’t take your efforts for granted, and we assure you that in the coming elections, we are with you, Mr. President,” Mawejje said.
NRM Women’s League leader Hon. Adrine Kobusingye applauded the riders for organizing the function, urging them to embrace government programs like the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and Operation Wealth Creation to fight poverty and grow the money economy.
The celebration comes ahead of President Museveni’s 81st birthday, which he will mark tomorrow, September 15.
