President Yoweri Museveni today joined hundreds of Christians at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Lubaga, as the church marked 100 years of existence.

In his address, President Museveni congratulated the Catholic Church on the milestone and encouraged believers to join the money economy by embracing government programs aimed at eradicating poverty.

“I was very active in church affairs during the 1960s and would have become a bishop had I continued,” Museveni said. “But we formed our movement, incorporating many of Christ’s teachings into our work. I have projects to get you out of poverty. I am not poor, but I want to go to heaven. I don’t want to face God and have Him ask me why I kept quiet when people were poor.”

The main sermon was delivered by the Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere, who thanked God for enabling the Church to reach 100 years despite the challenges since its sanctification.

Archbishop Ssemogerere also urged security personnel to avoid violence during the ongoing election period.
“I urge you to keep peace during this period of elections. Just as we keep our church clean and dignified, so must we keep our hearts clean,” he said.

He further appealed to the faithful and well-wishers to continue contributing towards the ongoing renovation works, noting that more funds are still needed. The Archbishop also presented a gift from the Lubaga Cathedral leadership to the President in appreciation of his support.

Dignitaries present included the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, businessman Godfrey Kirumira, members of the judiciary, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, and Prince David Wasajja, among others.

The celebration was held under the theme: “The temple of God is holy, and that temple is us.”

Various speakers encouraged Ugandans to actively participate in the upcoming general elections and to vote for leaders committed to transforming their communities while upholding peace.

Pius Mugalasi, chairperson of the organizing committee, revealed that the renovation team was given four months to complete the works.
“We needed Shs 2.4 billion for the renovations but had no money at first. I am happy to announce that we have achieved about 80% completion, having raised Shs 1.8 billion,” he said.

According to Mugalasi, President Museveni contributed Shs 300 million, Bukoola Holdings donated Shs 100 million, and Archbishop Ssemogerere gave Shs 53 million, among other contributions from schools and well-wishers.

The remaining works are expected to be completed by December 2025.
