The Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, yesterday made history as he officiated the closure of the Masaza Cup tournament at the newly renovated Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, the first such event held there since its refurbishment by city businessman Hamis Kiggundu.

The Kabaka was accompanied by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, Prince Wasajja, and other kingdom officials. The 20,000-seat facility was nearly filled to capacity as excited fans thronged to witness the finals in the presence of the 36th King of Buganda.

In his remarks, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga congratulated all 18 teams that participated in the competition and explained the decision to hold the final in Kampala’s Central Division.
“We chose Nakivubo because Namboole Stadium is still under renovation,” he said. “This is not the first time we are hosting the finals here. I thank His Majesty for gracing the occasion and urge all Baganda to continue supporting kingdom programs. Long live the King.”

The Minister for Sports in the Buganda Kingdom also thanked the Kabaka, sponsors, and organizing committee for a successful tournament. He hailed Buweekula County for winning their first-ever Masaza Cup title after defeating Singo 1–0 in a tightly contested match.

Rogers Mulindwa, a member of Nakivubo Stadium’s Board, appreciated the kingdom for choosing the venue and announced plans to rename the executive box where the Kabaka sat.
“We will now call it the King’s Box, and anyone who wishes to sit there will pay an extra fee. Every 1st November, we shall hold an event here in memory of the King’s visit,” he said.

Plascon Paints Uganda, represented by Marketing Head Daniel Kayongo, reaffirmed their long-term sponsorship of the tournament.
“We congratulate Buweekula on their first trophy and pledge to continue supporting the Masaza Cup for the next five to ten years,” Kayongo said.

The first runners-up received UGX 9 million, while the best player, Karema Jimmy, took home UGX 1 million. Best goalkeeper Byamukama Joel of Singo earned UGX 500,000, among other awards.

The Masaza Cup remains one of Buganda’s most cherished tournaments, promoting youth talent, cultural pride, and unity across the kingdom.
